Drug use in Kitsap County is out of control. My concern regarding this topic is mainly because I see so many people get derailed from life when drugs become a problem in their lives. How do we discourage kids from using drugs in the first place? Nancy Reagan had a great motto in her fight to stop drug use - "Just say no".
Unfortunately, even though it would work if her advice was taken, it is just unrealistic to think that just telling your kids to say no to drugs is going to keep them from using. Some people can use illegal drugs once in awhile and not get addicted but a large number need only use drugs once and they are then addicted. So what happens to those people? Jail, homelessness, poor health, death.
This post should be used to spur debate and create more awareness on the subject. More to come from my perspective....
Even though I taught each of my children to "say no to drugs", there comes a time when they have to make their own choices. It's like "preaching to the choir". One of my children never listened and wanted to "learn by experience" so...sad. I see similarities of his personality to those on my mothers side of the family, additive. It runs deep.
ReplyDeleteAs a mother of seven children, I understand how hard it is to allow your kids to make their own decisions. As parents, we want to share the life lessons we have learned as we grew into adulthood to save them from getting into trouble. It is tough to "allow" your kids to learn from their own mistakes.
